Silk Companion 1 (more Silk icons)

November 2007 – April 2011 • 169,580 views • 55 responses

Mark James (FamFamFam) created a great set of 1,022 silky-smooth 16×16 true-colour icons in PNG format, aptly named Silk Icons.

My set was fuelled by a need for a additional icons and variations in the same format. I had hoped to create more original icons in the same style however time constraints meant that majority of the 460+ icons are derivations and recompositions of the original set.

Excellent work. Silk has probably become the de facto icon set for the Internet and whilst Mark has decided to give up adding to the set, it’s good to see that somebody else has decided to extend it and continue the great work. Can’t believe nobody else has commented on this yet!

Simply because I’m looking for them and attempting to avoid building them myself:

On that requesting… I’m looking for a video cassette icon in this style. Can you help me? Other portable media would be great too (like audio cassette, laserdisc, etc…). Well, if you have time to do it, that is ;)

Great work! Thanks so much for your work in this space. I would suggest some lock modifications such as coloring? Maybe a grey version?

I’ve packaged your Icon Set with a custom Ext JS Extension to manage Icons.

    Thanks for a additional icons.

Food and Health icons would be nice. Things like plate, fork, fruits, protein, carbs, scale etc.

  37. Paul J. Lewis on February 3rd, 2009

Cool. Thanks for the extra icons. Nice.

Perhaps someone should stick a wiki-page/discussion thread somewhere to add icon requests? There have definitely been times when I wanted something not in the original set – I don’t remember now, though, what they were.

  38. Renaud Bompuis on February 25th, 2009

a really nice set. good thing you didnt put them in the “public domain!” hahahaha

  41. Damien Guard on March 28th, 2009

The originals are under creative commons and most of these are derived from that so I can’t make them a more liberal licence than the original.

Great work on this extension to Silk. We’ve been working on one ourselves for the geospatial software domain: http://projects.opengeo.org/geosilk/

Mark James has since allowed the set to licensed under CC-BY 3.0 (see: http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/) which is more compatible with free software licenses. Do you plan to similarly license yours as CC-BY 3.0?

    Thanks!

  43. subbu on June 8th, 2009

I really like the bug icon in Silk. But there are no companion icons for it. Here are some ideas for new icons (In the context of bug tracking):
    1. Feature (opposite of a bug?)
    2. Change request
    3. Won’t fix
    4. Not a bug

  44. Echilon on June 8th, 2009

Great icons, it’s a shame FamFamFam hasn’t released more.

    I miss a filter icon/filter icons: http://turbomilk.com/img/10mis-filter.png
There is a lot in this set, but an icon for filtering is lacking.

  47. DrDaxxy on July 13th, 2009

    This is great!
I do have a suggestion for more icons: Messenger icons for profiles – seeing how many forums use this iconset now; most of them have totally unfitting messenger icons.

  48. Nirmal on July 16th, 2009

Thanks for the great collection of the icon.

  49. Bruce on July 22nd, 2009

  50. Alan Hogan on August 21st, 2009

One icon I always felt was missing was an “Inbox” icon that was distinct from (unread) email.

Anyway thank you for contributing to this, it’s a beautiful thing!

I too was feeling the need for some additions and variations to the excellent silk collection — even though the original set is huge and very complete, it doesn’t always cover all your icon needs. Now thanks to you the collection is even more complete. Thanks a lot for the contribution!

  54. FF on March 2nd, 2011

I’ve a question, what icon size does a normal desktop application need?
Is there some kind of standard?
And why not using svg for the icons?

  55. Damien Guard on March 2nd, 2011

Toolbar icons are around 24×24, desktop icons on Windows either 32×32 or 48×48 and Mac Icons can range from 512×512 down.

I drew these icons based on an existing set of 16×16 icons so there were no other options.
