If I had a cent for every time I’ve gazed upon one of Susan Kare’s fonts and felt inspired…
This font attempts to capture the essence of her iconic Venice 14pt typeface and squeeze it down to 8x8 with some mixed results. It captures the feel but, unlike many other 8x8 conversions, this one had to take quite an artistic license to cram it in. It captures some of the flavour, if not the flourish and grace of the original.
A 2020 design that goes with a squared-off angular bold look that still manages to look different - is somewhat the opposite bolding of my Trouble font with some alternative takes in places.
The font works well on lists and titles. Screens can be readable for prose on decent quality displays.
I designed this font in 2019 but didn’t polish it up until 2020. I’d held back expecting to create some different variant or for some other font to otherwise intersect into a typeface but it never happened.
The font works quite well for futuristic styled games when used sparingly - large paragraphs of text can however be hard to read given the limited x-height.
This creation is hot off the press being both designed and published the same day in April 2020.
It is quite typical for bold fonts to bold the vertical strokes yet older wood-cut signs from the late 1800s tended to bold the horizontal strokes especially exaggerating the serifs. I did such a font a while back called Reward but wanted to try something different and so this here is - the Mild West.
The design really stands out from many other 8x8 fonts and yet is still quite readable. If you have a western based text adventure this should be in your consideration.
