Runes predate our Latin based alphabet and directly informed and influenced it in many ways. Many of the earlier ones are not too recognizable but taking the Anglo-Saxon runes and a bunch of liberties.

The result is something quite readable by modern eyes even on low-resolutions screens.


So back in 2006 I created First Pass as a messy font that I would refine into a second pass but couldn’t pull it off. Here I am in 2020 and I tried the experiment again from scratch this time drawing with the mouse in a single pass and then just moving a couple of pixels if needed.

The result is quite a pleasing hand-drawn font

Created in 2006 for BASIN with the goal of what drawing a font would be like if you hand-drew it and didn’t perform any clean-up.

The name First Pass encompasses this concept and I did give myself a few goes at each character. The result is something chaotic and messy and my idea of doing a “Second Pass” to clean up a few pixels just never happened.

You could use this for text or titles although it’s very messy and probably my least favorite font.

I’m a big fan of point ‘n click adventures from my first experience with Monkey Island through Rex Nebula, Larry, Deponia, the incredible Broken Sword series as well as Simon the Sorcerer and modern takes such as Machinarium and Ron Gilbert’s excellent Thimbleweed Park.

I’d come across Lamplight City during its development and the screenshots for the note taking to me did not fit with the look. The artwork is gorgeous throughout but the fonts were basically low-resolution renders of modern fonts that hadn’t even been cleaned up. I offered my talents specifically for the case journal and put together a low-resolution font in a clear, handwritten style. Unfortunately it went out in the beta test as the font for the hover text because it was deemed a bit too big for the notebook, and testers didn’t like it so it got yanked.

Oh well. Here it is transplanted into 8x8 with the only real sacrifices being the descenders.


This early 2020 typeface has sat around for far too long in the incomplete. As is often the case it felt like it needed something at the time but looking at it later revealed it’s already rather nice. Sometimes all it takes is fresh eyes and a reflection on the constraints.

This typeface is designed to look like a flowing brush script with plenty of wet ink. It is available in two weights and works well for most scenarios. I personally love the upper-case ‘C’ which sets the tone for the rest of the letters.
