Mild West

This creation is hot off the press being both designed and published the same day in April 2020.

It is quite typical for bold fonts to bold the vertical strokes yet older wood-cut signs from the late 1800s tended to bold the horizontal strokes especially exaggerating the serifs. I did such a font a while back called Reward but wanted to try something different and so this here is - the Mild West.

The design really stands out from many other 8x8 fonts and yet is still quite readable. If you have a western based text adventure this should be in your consideration.

Reward

I drew this font in 2019 using BASIN. It is inspired by block-printed Wanted Posters of the Wild West that were later codified in the 1938 font PlayBill. Of all the 8x8 fonts I’ve created this was one of the most frustrating. Trying to get the essence of large blocky serifs into a space that just didn’t allow it was challenging.

This font looks good for any western themed games where you have some control over the vertical spacing otherwise the letters will just run into each other as there simply weren’t enough pixels left to leave a horizontal row unused.
